The Diary of a Quitter

The Diary of a Quitter web site started as a way for me to have an ongoing activity that specifically focused my mind on being a nonsmoker. I'd already been visiting an on-line support group for some time, and had written Why I Quit Smoking in response to a question posed there. Although I stopped making diary entries in the Spring of 2001, I continued to add to the web site on a sporadic basis.

In late 2004, I slipped. Well, not slipped, really. Fell. Long and hard. When I realized I wasn't going to quit again right away, I took the site down, promising myself and others that I'd put it back up when I quit again.

I put the site back up in the spring of 2006 when I began yet another quit. Since then, I've been on again, off again, with far more time spent smoking than not.

My current quit began on November 17, 2008. And, like many, I quit because I want to have more time to spend with the most important person in my life. I'm calling this one The Final Quit.

The Diary
Hosted by BlogSpot, this is the Diary that covers my current quit.

Prelude to the (Original) Quit
This is a brief overview of the days leading up to my first quit. This may help some understand my mindset at the beginning of the process. If you just want the dirt, you can skip this part.

The Original Diary
It's safe to assume this diary will never become a "part of our history". And it won't be remembered for its literary style. What is safe, is to believe that what you're about to read are the thoughts of a long-term smoker as he goes through the first several months of transforming himself into a nonsmoker. I decided to leave this on the site for those who still may get some help from reading it.

Has it been easy? Not for me, it hasn't. But it has been do-able. And if I can do it, so can you! Read the diaries, both of them, and see if you can relate. You may want to consider doing a journal of your own. It doesn't have to be posted on the web; you could just write it all down in a book, or in a file on your computer. If you're rather flamboyant, especially when raging on the page about something a loved one did, you might want to password-protect this file to help avoid any nasty issues.
