Emergency Response Card

Here's an easy-to-make, and very effective, tool to help your quit. Get a small card; a business card is the perfect size (write on the back), or cut an index card to size. Now, before you write anything, ask yourself this question:

What (or who) is the most important thing in my life?

Think about this for a bit; it's really important that you answer this from the deepest part of your heart - the deeper the better as it will aid in the effectiveness of this tool. Take all the time you need. It's not like I'm going anywhere.

Got your answer? Good. Now, on your card, write the following:

      • Would I rather kill myself with a cigarette or have <blank>
      • Which is it? <blank> or smoking?
      • Other similar phrasing

Below is a life-size scan of my card, written on the back of an old business card. (Recycling saves trees!) I first did this four years into my original quit. I had suggested the idea to a friend, and thought, "what the heck? I can do one for me, too. I now have another card for this quit.

Keep your card with you at all times. In addition, you can make a card to tape to your computer monitor. Make a sign for your office. Put a card in your car. Plaster this message any and everywhere you can think of. Whenever you have a craving, read your card, and let it take you back to your heart at the moment you discovered what is truly the most important thing or person in your life. Now, do you want more time to spend with that person, or doing that thing? Or would you rather kill yourself sucking on a burning tube of Death? Your choice.

Choose Wisely
